I (55M) had an older brother, Mike. He was 5 years older than me. He married and had a daughter, Sophie, when he was 30 years old. Unfortunately, two years later disaster struck and both Mike and his wife were killed in an accident.
I took Sophie and tried to raise her the best way I could. It was hard balancing work and suddenly being a full-time mom and I admit I made a lot of mistakes, especially when Sophie was still little.
Despite that, Sophie grew and blossomed into a wonderful woman. When she was still little, she could only have dreamed of such a result. Once Sophie was old enough, she expressed her desire to go to university, so I did everything I could to help.
I took on more work to earn enough to pay for college, searched for scholarships, and helped her study. Somehow, somehow, we managed to do it. She had to commute from her home and work part time, but she went to college and graduated with only a small debt. Shortly after her graduation, she found a good job and began working full time. She was a long way away so we didn’t see much. I admit that suddenly having an empty house was sad, but it was for the best. 3 years ago Sophie met this guy, Jerry (32 I think).
They have been dating for 2 years and he seems like a nice guy. She at some point sent me a photo of them together. Sophie suddenly appeared at my door 4 days ago. She had a lot of bags and said that she was on vacation and that she wanted to stay with me for 10 days. I’m happy with this, but it’s strange behavior – she’s come home for holidays in the past (mostly Christmas and Easter), but never for this long and especially not without calling me first. I tried to ask her if something had happened and she told me no. She seems happy, so I doubt anything bad happened, but I feel like she’s hiding something from me.
I’ve spent the last 4 days with her, cooking, watching TV, and talking, but she still refuses to tell me the real reason she’s here. TL; DR: I took care of my niece since she was 2 years old. She is now 30 and suddenly she is back home. She won’t tell me the real reason she’s here. Any idea about the possible reason for her behavior? Am I just being too suspicious?
